Set the counting rule

The word attendance is often used loosely. A wristband or ticket identifier can distinguish a person from a second admission, while a simple clicker cannot.

Put the rule into practice

WORKED EXAMPLE

A concert guest who leaves and returns creates two admissions but one unique visitor.

Steps for a reliable tally

  1. For admissions, count each new crossing in.
  2. For unique visitors, use ticket IDs or a separate identification method.
  3. For occupancy, subtract the departure then add the return.
  4. Report the exact label beside the final number: unique attendees, total entries or current occupancy.
  5. This prevents a re-entry-heavy event from looking larger than it was.

Why this detail matters

If the goal is unique visitors, the count needs a stable identifier or a reliable way to recognize returns. A bare tally cannot provide that. If the goal is admissions, repeated entries are valid observations. State which definition you used when comparing this event with another one.

At the venue

You can keep three separate numbers: admissions, unique tickets scanned and live balance. They serve different uses. Admissions shows door workload, ticket IDs estimate people, and the balance supports a current occupancy check. Never replace one with another simply because the numbers are close at a quiet moment.

What can go wrong?

Treating every re-entry as a new person inflates the unique-visitor total.
