Set the counting rule

Patterns may say to work a number of rows after a marker or shaping event. A dated checkpoint beside the counter makes it easier to recover after a pause.

Put the rule into practice

WORKED EXAMPLE

After finishing row 17 and turning, a completed-row counter should display 17.

Steps for a reliable tally

  1. For flat knitting, finish the row and turn your work before incrementing.
  2. Keep the counter next to the project and check it against visible row features after a break.
  3. Look at the last completed row and the next instruction before tapping.
  4. If the two disagree, use the fabric and pattern rather than the displayed number alone.

Why this detail matters

The edge of a textured fabric can look different from the center. Choose a consistent place to inspect rows and use the pattern's markers as checkpoints. If an increase row is important, record its completed row number separately so you can find the next instruction after putting the project down.

At the project

A row counter is most useful when it agrees with a physical checkpoint. Put a marker at the last known shaping row or write it on the pattern margin. If you pause halfway through a row, leave the completed-row number unchanged and note where you stopped in the pattern.

What can go wrong?

Switching from counting completed rows to counting the next row creates a one-row error.
