Set the counting rule
Reading the chart means interpreting the category and its marks together. A numerical frequency column should agree with the marks, not replace checking them.
Put the rule into practice
Two full bundles and three singles in the apples row mean 13 apples.

Steps for a reliable tally
- Identify the category labels first.
- Count the crossed bundles, multiply by five and add leftover strokes, then check the written frequency column if present.
- Choose one row and recalculate it without looking at the frequency number.
- Repeat for another row to catch a transcription error.
Why this detail matters
A tally row often has both marks and a written frequency. If the two differ, recount the marks and ask whether a mark was missed or added twice. The chart should also say what each category means; otherwise a correct frequency can still be hard to interpret.
At the chart
When groups are tightly packed, put a finger or pencil beside the bundle you just counted. This avoids counting it twice. Work across the row from one side to the other, then check the leftover singles. A frequency column is a helpful verification, not the starting point.
What can go wrong?
The diagonal fifth line belongs to its group; it is not an extra mark after five.
