Set the counting rule

A clicker is practical for modest, short-term flows, as the FHWA describes for manual traffic counts. Heavy, continuous flows call for more observers or a different method.

Put the rule into practice

WORKED EXAMPLE

At a lecture, the volunteer records each entrant once and another volunteer handles re-entry at a side door.

Steps for a reliable tally

  1. Position the observer where the full crossing line is visible.
  2. Take brief breaks with a documented handoff, and compare the tally with ticket scans when available.
  3. Watch a short sample together with a second person.
  4. Compare totals and agree how to handle groups, strollers and people who turn around in the doorway.

Why this detail matters

Manual counting becomes difficult when people arrive in dense groups or several lanes at once. Change the staffing or observation point before the rush, not after a missed surge. The field record should say where the observer stood, which line was crossed and when the session began and ended.

At the venue

Practice with a brief sample before the actual crowd arrives. Have observers say the rule aloud: one tap for each person crossing this line in this direction. If a group blocks the view, mark the uncertain period and ask for another observation method. The purpose is a defensible count, not an uninterrupted stream of taps.

What can go wrong?

A manual doorway count cannot tell how many people are inside if exits are ignored.
