Set the counting rule
A field sheet can record turning movement, direction and class as separate dimensions. Pick only the dimensions your observer can reliably watch at once.
Put the rule into practice
For a junction, cars turning left and bicycles going straight need separate categories.

Steps for a reliable tally
- Create a separate field for each class and direction.
- Record the start and end of every interval, then total each column after observation.
- Before the real count, run a short trial and see whether every vehicle fits one category.
- Fix ambiguous categories before collecting the final intervals.
Why this detail matters
A manual sheet should be simple enough to use while watching the road safely. Put high-priority classes in a clear order and use a separate sheet or observer if the junction is too complex. Never choose a position that puts the observer in traffic to gain a better view.
In the field
A count sheet can have a separate row for each time bin and columns for direction and class. Do not create more columns than one observer can follow safely. If turning movements matter, position the observer to see the whole junction or use several observers with non-overlapping assignments.
What can go wrong?
A single grand total cannot answer how many vehicles turned left or which direction was busier.
