Set the counting rule

The marks preserve the act of counting, while grouping makes the total easier to read. Different traditions have used different marks; the common classroom pattern closes a set of five.

Steps for a reliable tally

  1. Draw four short parallel strokes as items arrive.
  2. Cross them with a fifth stroke, then begin the next group.
  3. Add complete groups and leftovers to get the total.
  4. Draw a fresh group and count the strokes aloud.
  5. If the fifth diagonal seems confusing, cover the group and recount it as five individual marks.

Why this detail matters

Tally marks are useful when observations arrive one at a time because the recorder need not rewrite a total after every item. They are less useful when you need dates or detailed attributes for each observation. In that case, keep a fuller record alongside the tally.

At the chart

A mark can be made quickly without waiting to calculate a running numeral, which is why tallies suit passing observations. When the session ends, the groups can be summed. If the observation has several attributes, use separate labeled rows; a single row of marks loses those distinctions.

What can go wrong?

A dense ungrouped row is much harder to audit than separated groups of five.
